Concerto Grosso

Errollyn Wallen (1958)

Concerto Grosso 2008

piano, violin, double bass and strings

My Concerto Grosso is written for piano, violin, double bass and strings. It my third commission for Orchestra of the Swan but the first time I am performing with this wonderful ensemble though Dave Le Page and I have worked together on many occasions performing, touring and recording. Indeed, his sound and way of playing were an important influence in this piece. I plan to write him his own concerto one day!

In many ways writing the Concerto Grosso took me back to my student days when we studied and learned to copy the style of Corelli and Bach for our Techniques class. I didn’t know I was going to have a career as a full-time composer then, but I loved this part of my degree. This commission offered me the opportunity of wigging out a little more than as a student and I have incorporated elements from popular music.

There is a strong element of dance in this piece and, as in Baroque and popular music, buoyant rhythms are at the forefront. The work is in four movements.
