Over the past few years I have become increasingly interested in our perception of how time passes - the way in which identical durations can appear to run quickly or slowly, the way we are expected to absorb more and more information within a period of time and hence the way we view our time.

LENGTH attempts to explore this a little by organising music into contrasting blocks, some bare and stark, others overflowing with information, which then on their reappearance expand or contract in duration as the piece progresses.

LENGTH moves through carefully proportioned waves of climaxes akin, if you like, to an ocean swell moving through a series of crests and troughs. These can be closely spaced or wide apart, they can be buffeted from the side and their shape can be changed but ultimately their progress comprises one unified movement towards land.

The musical material is derived from an earlier dance score composed in 1990 for David Massingham Dance, and is a complete reworking. The piece is approximately 26 minutes long.
