As I was about to make my first visit to South America in 2012 I began to explore the music that seemed to symbolise that continent and became very intrigued by the Tango and, in particular, the work of Astor Piazzola. Then I noticed that most of his work was for small groups featuring the Bandoleon, which he played himself, and that there was no Tango for large orchestra. So, for fun really but also in homage to Piazzola, I set myself the challenge of writing a Tango that only used the usual forces of the Symphony Orchestra. The main melody was inspired by a figure that is often found in the accompaniment of the Tango. TANGO! was first performed in Cardiff by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on 18th September, 2015 on the eve of its South American Tour. The conductor was Edwin Outwater.
