Rondel was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta for their Ellington Centenary Tribute, given in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London on May 1st 1999.

This piece is based on a 16th century French popular tune, ‘Je fille quand Dieu me donne de quoy’, first printed in 1564, it also quotes from Duke Ellington’s ‘I’m gonna go fishin’, written for the film ‘Anatomy of a Murder’ in 1959.
